Early Symptoms of Fistula – Don’t Ignore These Signs
Anal fistula is a condition that often develops gradually after an anal abscess. Recognizing the early symptoms of fistula can help you get treatment before complications develop. Here are the key signs to watch for.
What is an Anal Fistula?
An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel between the inside of the anal canal and the skin surrounding the anus. It forms when an anal gland becomes infected and an abscess develops, which then drains and leaves a tunnel behind.
Early Warning Signs of Anal Fistula
1. Persistent Pus Discharge
One of the earliest and most characteristic signs of anal fistula is a persistent or intermittent discharge of pus from a small opening near the anus. This opening may be mistaken for a pimple or boil. If you notice pus discharge that does not heal, consult a doctor promptly.
2. Dull Aching Pain
A deep, dull aching pain around the anus and buttocks that comes and goes is an early symptom of fistula. The pain may worsen when you sit for long periods or during bowel movements.
3. Small Opening Near the Anus
A small visible opening or pore near the anus — the external opening of the fistula — may be present. Sometimes a small protrusion of granulation tissue is visible.
4. Recurrent Anal Abscesses
If you have had repeated anal abscesses that keep coming back after drainage, this strongly suggests the presence of an underlying fistula. Each abscess episode represents a fistula that has not been properly treated.
5. Irritation and Redness Around Anus
Persistent skin irritation, redness, and swelling around the anus caused by the ongoing discharge.
6. Fever
Low-grade fever or episodes of high fever indicate active infection in the fistula tract. This requires urgent medical attention.
Why Early Treatment is Important
Fistulas do not heal on their own. Without treatment, they can:
- Become more complex and involve more of the sphincter
- Cause recurrent infections and abscesses
- Significantly affect quality of life
- In rare cases, become cancerous over very long periods
